Microbiology: Mycobacteriology

The Mycobacteriology lab provides reference and specialized testing services for the isolation and identification of all Mycobacterium species, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and other nontuberculous mycobacteria. Specimens are accepted from public and private health care providers.

Positive isolations or identifications of M. tuberculosis must be reported by the submitter to North Carolina Tuberculosis Control, Communicable Disease Branch in accordance with State Law.

Services provided include:

  • Preliminary assessment using stains and cultures
  • Further identification using:
    • PCR
    • DNA probes
    • Biochemical characterizations
    • Drug sensitivities
